Show Notes
- In the warmup, Randy was in a little earthquake this morning (in the … Town of Bedrock!), Kevin finished his Renderific 1.0, his SVG renderer for Atari 8-bit computers, and put it on Github. He also spent some time researching open-source software licenses, and spent $10 on Bite Size Networking, the new Julia Evans zine. Leo fired his bookkeeper, and Gary read and enjoyed Erebus: One Ship, Two Epic Voyages, and the Greatest Naval Mystery of All Time.
- Leo followed up on last week’s discussion of ISO in digital cameras: ISO Is Not Fake and Tony Northrup Is Wrong and One Final Look at Tony Northrup’s ISO Drama (quote: “Some, not all cameras are ISO invariant.”)
- Kevin found that GPS has their own sort-of Y2K change coming, and some devices may malfunction on or after April 6 (ZDnet), which led to a longer discussion of how far GPS has come, and looping back to a book Kevin recommended in TEH 43, Longitude: The True Story of a Lone Genius Who Solved the Greatest Scientific Problem of His Time.
- Leo is amazed at the continued strides in Micro SD cards, not just their capacity and dropping cost, but their higher speeds and lower power consumption, via TechCrunch and The Verge.
- Randy is amused that Nike’s new “Smart Shoes” have crashed, according to The Verge.
- Leo is fascinated by password-less logins, as described in TechCrunch and Wired.
- And yes, the ending was totally spontaneous, not planned at all. 🙂
